THE CITY OF NORMAN
A Beautiful and Vibrant City
Norman is most notable for being the home of the University of Oklahoma, but is an amazing place for anyone to call home in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area. With great schools, low cost of living, and fantastic amenities Norman offers something for the whole family.
Norman is one of the largest suburbs of the Oklahoma City metro area with more than 118,000 permanent residents. However, as the home of the University of Oklahoma, Norman offers much more to residents in terms of amenities than most cities its size.
Sponsored in large part by the University, Norman is home to several museums, performing arts centers, and annual festivals. The University of Oklahoma is also home to some of the highest performing colligate sports teams in the country and comes alive every year as the Sooners compete against teams from across the country.
Norman was first settled during the Land Run of 1889, and named in honor of Abner Norman who was the initial land surveyor of the land. Officially incorporated as May 13, 1891, five months after the founding of the University of Oklahoma. Experiencing sustained growth throughout its existence, by the time I-35 was completed in 1959, Norman was well on its way to being a bedroom community for Oklahoma City.
Norman's public school system is one of the highest-rated school systems in the state of Oklahoma. With above-average test scores and a low student/teacher ratio, families can be confident that their children are receiving a great education.
Explore the Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art and see world-renowned works from Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh or brush up on your history at the University of Oklahoma Western History Collection. Take the kids for a ride in the bumper boats at Andy Alligator's Fun Park or tailgating at Sooner football game. Enjoy a night on the town with drinks at BIG Brewing Co, or a night of gaming at the Riverwind Casino.
Norman offers a great line-up of restaurants and boutique shopping. The historic Campus Corner adjacent to the University of Oklahoma campus is a beautiful tree-lined strip with small boutique and specialty shops, cafes, and the like. Some favorite eateries include, the Blackbird Gastro Pub, Hurts Donut Company, and Secondwind Coffee House.
